Dotdash shares 30 years of design practice
About this event
For our March talk and spring party, we’re pleased to welcome Despina Macris from Dotdash. Drawing on a thirty year history, she will share some of the studio’s most memorable and successful projects with a focus on the contextual approach Dotdash takes working across 10 different sectors: transport; healthcare; urban precincts & public realm; education & research; major events; parklands & open spaces; cultural, civic & sport; corporate, commercial and residential.
Co-founded in 1987 in Brisbane Australia by Mark Ross and Despina Macris, the Dotdash design team works on an interdisciplinary model, engaging particular design skill sets to the layered aspects of wayfinding communication. Dotdash values projects that enable planned, considered design outcomes. Ultimately they believe their role as designers is to provide commercial and civic benefit to the physical, social and cultural fabric of community and place.
Dotdash played a very active role in the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games and has since consulted on subsequent Games in Athens, Beijing, London and Sochi. More recently Dotdash was one of several international design practices to work on Transport for New South Wales multi-modal transport system, and has completed several large scale healthcare and public realm commissions.
About our speaker
Despina Macris – Director at Dotdash. Despina has spent over thirty years working in design practice. She works closely with the wayfinding strategy team leading design direction. Her area of expertise is in developing visual languages that respond to how wayfinding strategies are communicated in the built environment. Her focus is on the relationships between the physical fabric, spatial and information design, and how visual languages transform contextual evidence into authentic responses. She is passionate about connecting people to place. Her work reflects her belief in the importance of this critical element of design as part of wayfinding principles and methodology.
Despina is board member of the SEGD (Society of Experiential Graphic Design, USA); a member of IIID (International Institute of Information Design, Zurich), Sign Design Society (UK) and Colour Society of Australia. She has presented at the SEGD 2015 International Conference in Chicago, Liveable Cities Conference (Melbourne), SOM (San Francisco), Design Institute of Australia and Creative Mornings. In 2016, Despina was part of the judging panel for the SEGD 2016 Global Design Awards. In 2018, she was part of the jury for the 2018 Australian Graphic Design Awards, and this year she has been invited to be part of the jury for the 2019 Latvian Design Awards in April.
